Local Hangouts

1. The Roxy: http://www.roxyvan.com

This is one of the best-known clubs in Vancouver. It’s been open since 1988, and one of the spots that sometimes attracts celebrities and hockey players, plain folks looking for a good time and rock stars from Nickelback to Ashton Kutcher. Usually packed, even on weeknights.

2. Alibi Room: 157 Alexander St

This is a great place for legitimate beer with a ton of local brews. Almost twenty taps and three casks, plus bottled beer make this an obvious attraction for locals in the know and visitors who are beer aficionados and have discovered this interesting, friendly pub.

3. Railway Club: http://www.therailwayclub.com

The price isn’t too high, unknown-but-great bands play live music, the staff is friendly, and the crowd is great. Another hotspot of Vancouver, the Railway Club is practically an institution of the city, and always gets top reviews from club-goers of all sorts.

Classy and Wine Bars

1. Au Petit Chavignol: http://www.aupetitchavignol.com

This cheese and wine bar is an incredible experience for the taste buds if you’re a connoisseur, or simply can appreciate a great meal. The service is always excellent, and meals like macaroni and cheese or poutine are good to finish up if you still have an appetite.

2. Bacchus Lounge: http://www.wedgewoodhotel.com/files_2/menus.php

Very comfortable seating, an extensive list of wines, friendly service, and delicious food are just a few of the reasons you should visit Bacchus. Part of a boutique hotel, but not one of those that make you say, “Ew, hotel bars.” Instead, this classy lounge also pulls off a cozy air with opulent décor, a difficult combination.

3. West Restaurant + Bar: http://www.westrestaurant.com

Delicious food, legendary bartender, to-die-for tasting menu, funky décor, fabulous service… what more can you say? This bar and restaurant combination has it all. The food and drinks are pricey, but this is a top-class business and the dining or drinking experience is worth every cent.

Vancouver Sports Bars

1. G Sports Bar and Grill: 1208 Granville St

While the atmosphere is sometimes a little plain, the number of TVs makes up for it! There’s an outdoor patio with a big-screen TV, and the standard bar fare is pretty tasty, too.

2. Coppertank Grill: 3135 W Broadway

A good selection of Canadian beers, delicious pizza and a young student crowd can be found here. You can see the game on the TV and order the usual bar food. Service can be a little slow in this place (which is always crowded).

3. Rugby Beach Club Grille: http://www.rugbybeachclub.com

Low prices for drinks and food (both of which are great quality), attentive staff and an extensive menu of varied drinks make this a good place to come. The bar in the back has plenty of TVs, and a companionably noisy atmosphere kicks in back there when a game is playing.

Vancaouver Gay Bars

1. The Odyssey: http://www.theodysseynightclub.com

Vancouver has a strong gay nightlife scene, and this bar is one of the top bars for both gay and gay-friendly people. Straight, bi, gay, or undecided -- you won’t be excluded at this unpretentious, well-behaved and well-staffed club. A great vibe and fun dance music that keeps the crowd lively can be found here, too.

2. 1181: http://www.tightlounge.com

Another relaxed, comfortable place with a friendly, fun crowd attracted. The bartenders and staff are particularly friendly. You can enjoy the lively music and a great view from the window or classic movies on the TV in the back of the bar, and chat with a nice mix of people, all of whom are stylish but not intimidating.

3. Shine: http://www.shinenightclub.com

Lots of different types of music, live events, and relatively cheap drinks make this worth a stop on a weekend night. It’s a fairly small club, but there’s a smaller back room behind the DJ booth. The décor is certainly eyecatching, and the lineups usually aren’t bad (unless there’s a popular gig).
